Frequently asked questions about aerial class...

Q. What will we cover in the class?
A. The Aviatricks Beginners Aerial Skills class focuses on static trapeze and aerial fabric (aka silks) skills. You will work on moves underneath and on top of the trapeze bar, and moves in and around the knotted and un-knotted fabrics. You will hang from your hands, sit on the equipment, stand on the equipment and hang upside down from it. Once a basic level of strength and skill is established in our beginner group then we will be able to explore beginner's choreography on other equipment, e.g. hoop and rope.

Q. I don't have any upper-body strength, am I strong enough?
A. You can be! We will build up strength gradually in the class. In aerial work, your abdominal strength is just as important as upper-body strength (if not more so) and we will work to improve both. Your grip strength will also improve over time.

Q. I'm scared of heights! Should I come?
A. People undertake aerial circus for all sorts of different reasons - to get fit, for a physical and mental challenge, to express themselves in a novel way...If you would like to challenge yourself in this way then you are welcome to come to class. You won't be made to do anything you're not comfortable with.

Q. What should I wear?
A. Aerial arts can hard on the body, especially at first, so it's good to wear long-sleeved close-fitting layers, e.g. leggings underneath tracksuit bottoms, and a long-sleeved t-shirt, to protect your skin from any friction burns. A leotard/unitard underneath can help keep you cosy and covered up when hanging upside down! To find quality unitards for adults, google "Dance Direct".

Q. Who is the teacher?
A. The class is taught by Valerie Beattie, a qualified Pilates teacher, with a professional training and background in dance and circus performance. Safety and good technique are her priorities so you will be kept safe while working hard and having fun. The class will also occasionally be taught by guest tutors Stephen Armour and Lynne Sneddon to offer variety and challenge for the participants.

Q.When can I start?!
A. Next Monday! We are still accepting bookings for our Monday night class.
